Power Rangers Season 1 Episode 7 - Big Sisters

Last episode was pretty much just there. It had its moments but wasn't enough to really stand out from the crowd. How will this episode fare in comparison to its predecessor? Let's find out.

--------------------------------------

We start off at the Juice Bar where Kimberly and Trini are looking for a girl named Maria. They stop for a minute to watch Jason and Zack spar a bit, who stop when they see the girls. They explain that they volunteered to be big sisters for a girl named Maria, which you could probably figure out from the title. Kimberly is worried that she may have gotten into trouble, but Zack assures her that they'll find her. We then see someone turn off the hot water to the building, which results in some guys in towels running into the room, presumably giving fanservice for the female viewers. Kimberly and Trini then see a small girl with black pigtails by the switch for the water and exclaim "Maria!". Just the delivery on that line is priceless. "Oh, you shut off the hot water and caused some guys to run into the room wearing nothing but towels, embarrassing them and crippling their self-esteem! You little rascal!"

We then get our usual cut to the moon, where Rita says....wait for it.....she has a plan! Yeah, that was worth it.

We cut back to the Bar where Trini asks Maria why she shut off the hot water. She said she just wanted to get the girls' attention, and Kimberly explains that they'll be her friends no matter what she's like. I'm trying to not question the lack of logic here. Trini then offers to take them out on a picnic.

We move back to the moon where Rita explains that she's found the Power Eggs, which will give them enough power to defeat the Rangers and even Zordon. Damn, what took her so long to find those eggs? They go to the cave where the eggs are, and Rita orders Squat to open the box containing the eggs. He gets zapped by the magic surrounding the box, however, and Rita remembers that only a child can open the box. They return to the moon where Rita tells Finster that she wants a monster that can kidnap a kid, and she asks for a Chunky Chicken.

...I'm sorry, but you just can't help but groan a bit every time you read that name. It's just so ridiculous and not evil that it can't be described.

Anyway, Finster has one ready to go and proclaims that it will be the meanest chicken ever. (ugh...) It goes through the Easy-Bake Oven of Evil and comes out...well, I'll describe it at the end.

We cut back to Earth where the girls are having a picnic with Maria, who thanks them for being her friends and goes on about how her dad doesn't understand her. Yet we never find out why. Is he at work all the time? Does he travel a lot? Is he having an affair? Can we get something to work with here?! Anyway, Trini tells her that she can talk to them about anything, and Kimberly then asks her about the boys in her class. Maria, being a child, proclaims them all to be dorks. Kimberly's comment? "She'll learn." Oh, yeah, she'll learn all about while she's going through puberty. Why not tell her how much fun that is, Kim? But before Kim can delve into that topic, Putties attack the group. Trini and Kimberly manage to hold them off for a while, but they still get a hold of Maria and teleport away.

Rita crows over this minor victory and Goldar orders Squat and Baboo to come with him to retrieve the eggs.

We head back to the Juice Bar where Ernie serves his "Ernie Special", a ridiculously huge banana split that must be seen to be believed. Is it for all three male Rangers who happen to be sitting there? Nope, it's only for Zack. Jason, being the only sane voice in the area, proclaims that Zack simply cannot eat that. Sadly, before we witness Zack take a one-way trip to DiabetesVille, Kimberly and Trini run in to explain the situation. They try to contact Zordon for help, but the communicators aren't working for some reason. Likewise for the teleportation system, basically leaving them stranded. Billy, however, reveals that he was working on something in his garage that could help them out.

They head over there where Billy reveals his newest creation, the Rad Bug, a modified silver Beetle that can transport them anywhere in the world and can go from 0 to 3000 in 2.8 seconds. OK, why hasn't Billy won a Nobel Prize yet? That's something that might actually convince me to get my license. The group enters the vehicle and drive off into the sky, landing in the Command Center.

They explain the situation to Zordon, and Zordon and Alpha realize that Rita's found the Power Eggs. Zordon explains that millions of years ago, the Morphing Masters, ancient sorcerers, created the Power Eggs and sealed them in a box, which could only be opened by the touch of an innocent child. And Rita picked MARIA for this?!

We head to the cave where the Eggs are where we see that Maria's already opened the box, and all Squat and Baboo have to do now is deliver them to Rita. The group heads toward the cave via the Rad Bug, and soon see Goldar, Squat, and Baboo with the eggs, but no Chicken or Maria. The group morphs and get ready to fight the goons. They pull out their Blade Blasters and do some weird battle formation, where the female rangers stand on the male rangers shoulders, point all their blasters together in a circle, and fire some pyramid-shaped multi-coloured beam that knocks the eggs away. It's hard to describe but looked pretty cool. We won't see it much, though. Anyway, the eggs are knocked into a nearby body of water and start to float away, which was the Rangers initial mission, for some reason. They pull out their weapons and start to fight Goldar and the Chicken, who's just returned. Alpha then discovers that Maria is being held at the old factory, and informs the Rangers to head their immediately.

The Rangers decide to form the MegaZord to do this.

So....what happened to never escalating a fight, guys?

They arrive at the factory with the MegaZord, to see Maria hanging from a power wire by a rope, and the Chicken floating over it with a pair of scissors. Rita demands that they give her the Power Eggs, but the Rangers say they've lost them. The Chicken cuts the rope, but the MegaZord saves her. Rita makes the Chicken grow to giant-size, and Billy summons the Rad Bug via remote to take Maria away from the fight. After Maria's safe, the Chicken starts beating on the MegaZord, including one weird moment where it cuts through SPACE ITSELF with its scissors to teleport behind the MegaZord and attack it. But of course the MegaZord retaliates, summons the Power Sword and wins the fight. Rita, of course is pissed, they start blaming each other, and Rita gets another headache.

We cut back to the Juice Bar where a news report is being broadcast about the Power Rangers victory. This is something I don't get: They have a news team to report on the Power Rangers' battles and know that Rita Repulsa is on the moon and is a threat to the planet. So why don't they send someone up there to fight Rita? I mean, yeah, we all know they'd fail, but at least they'd be trying. Anyway, Kimberly holds up some of Ernie's veggie chili, which is on the house, and a crowd starts to gather around her. This eventually causes her to drop the chili onto Bulk, who happened to be sitting by. End scene.

------------------------------------

I really don't know about this one. Sure, we were introduced to the Rad Bug, which we'd see in later episodes, but everything else was just a mess. The Chunky Chicken is one of the more unoriginal monsters of the series. Just a giant chicken with a blue face holding a giant pair of scissors. Almost no thought seemed to go into that. The subplot with Maria wasn't given enough time to be memorable, and the message of friendship was shoved down our throats with Kimberly constantly proclaiming "that's what friends are all about". Not a very good episode at all.

The Chunky Chicken...gack....I think I just gagged a little.
